Seeing The Good Around Me: Light

I am sure you have heard the descriptions. “He lights up the room”. “You couldn’t help but smile when she did.” “You can’t not like him.”

There are some people who have a quality about them that draws others in. Sometimes that quality is identifiable, like a smile or their sense of humor. Other times it is some unseen quality that you cannot describe. There is a tone of voice they use that brims with enthusiasm or the way they hang on your every word and make you feel important.

These folks seem to have a special light inside of them. Others are drawn to them as if they were the Pied Piper. At a social gathering, they are never alone and you’re lucky if you can get a seat near them. You can pick them out easily since there is usually a band of silence around them followed by roars of laughter.

These special folks have always enthralled me. I am the opposite of them, not putting myself down or to be derogatory, but if everyone shined as brightly as they did, we wouldn’t be able to see. I’ve tried to study them and mimic them in social situations where I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. It didn’t go over well. You can’t mimic light; you either are one of them or you aren’t.

For those of us like me, our light is a little different. Instead of being bright like the sun, I’m more of a candle. I’m good for quiet conversations and peaceful reflection. I wouldn’t know what to do with a crowd to entertain, but I can hang on your every word one-on-one.

Whatever type of light you bring into the room, let it shine. Shine to the level of brightness your light gives. And, know that when you are gone, the world will feel a little dimmer.
